Description
We are heading into challenging times, but we have a wonderful opportunity to build resilient communities and meet our neighbours to work together, and look after one another.
Mutual aid is happening all over the country! What is it? Basically people deciding that they are going to DIY and make their own solutions, and organising together. Its simply people looking out for one another. Neighbours checking on each other, dropping off food, sparing a toilet roll, or making sure elderly people aren't feeling too lonely.
We will be gathering people together-apart in a zoom (webinar/live chat) across the country on SATURDAY 28th to talk about whats working and why.
And hopefully give you the resources and confidence to get out on SUNDAY 29th - Neighbour Day... and adopt your own street.
We could be going into a much stricter lockdown, which is why we need to check in with our literal neighbours and people in walking distance.
Many people may have had events planned for this day and cancelled - instead, we are suggesting you make contact with your neighbours in a way that feels comfortable >> a safe, socially distanced door knock and flyer drop, or chat (at distance) if you feel confident. We will have a doctor on the video call to let you know about safe practices.
The idea is we go HYPER LOCAL. Street by street, people are setting up either facebook pages or whatsapp groups to keep in touch. 10s of 1000s of people are already doing this all over the country. And there are organisations providing great technical infrastructure that you can then register your group so others can find it!
Not only is this useful for now, but how many of us have said we should meet our neighbours and never do - what a great opportunity! And for those of us who identify as activists/organisers, building community resilience and connections will be wonderful for future challenges. Most of us live in cities and we could learn from the community shown in country towns during the bushfires.
Please register your details here for log in details - we may need to cap numbers, depending on interest, and we can email you a full resource kit as well.
This event is hosted by CounterAct and will feature speakers who are experienced in mutual aid and community building, and those who are brand new, we will have a doctor, a range of perspectives, including vulnerable folks, and space for discussions and questions, as well as pointers for systems where we can track and connect groups.
LETS DO THIS!
We're excited to do this. This call and other work beng done by other organisations could make the difference of 1000's of people feeling connected in, as we head into uncertain times. Nonviolent direct action is not just against things, it is for community, for health, for justice, for environment. Mutual aid is NVDA.
We acknowledge this call is taking place on unceded Aboriginal nations across the continent.
