Description

Outline

  1. Setup your visualization environment

  2. Building the four most common charts with Tableau

  3. Partner up for better practice

1Setup your visualization environment

Many workshops today will skip the step of setting up an environment that enables proper data visualization. While I will expect you to have certain setups handled already, such as installing Tableau Public on your machine already others we will walk through.

For instance, I will introduce you to several areas I frequent on the web to gather inspiration. If you are new to data visualization you may see this as a distraction. I assure you it’s the first solid step you take toward designing a visual form that resonates with your audience. I’ll explain why during our workshop.

I will also introduce you to a couple apps and analog tools I use to stay focused while I am in the process. Creative work, such as visualization, requires an immense amount of focus, which is more and more difficult today with all our distractions.

Lastly, I will share the file structure I use to keep my environment organized while creating visualizations. There is a lot to manage in our work and things can quickly get out of hand which negatively affects your outcomes. By having a simple guideline to follow for organizing your resources you can keep the visualization top of mind rather than knocked out of the zone by clutter.

2Building the four most common charts in Tableau

Data visualization is the practice of creating visual forms humans intuitively understand. Visual forms can come in many shapes and sizes. A skill of a professional in this field is the ability to quickly understand which visual forms will lend themselves to your story and are accessible given your dataset.

In this section of the workshop, I will help you understand how to effectively use the most common chart types so you can more effectively apply them in your work.

Visual forms we will cover

  • Bar

    • How do you create bar charts in Tableau?

    • What message most effectively comes across in bar charts?

    • Why might we want to use horizontal bar charts instead of vertical bar charts?

  • Line

    • How do you create line charts in Tableau?

    • What message most effectively comes across inline charts?

    • How can we selectively emphasize one line rather than another in Tableau?

  • Scatter

    • How do you create a scatter plot in Tableau?

    • What message are you communicating with scatter plots?

    • What do we need to watch out for when creating this chart type?

  • Pie

    • How do you create a pie chart in Tableau?

    • What message are you communicating with this chart type?

    • What do you need to watch out for with this visual form?

3Practice with a partner

The final section of our workshop is where we see all your hard work pay off. For this section, I will have you partner up with another person in the workshop for a pair-programming exercise.

No, we aren’t going to be coding anything.

Instead, we’ll work in pairs to develop charts together. One person will instruct and the other will develop, then you will switch roles with your partner. You can swap roles for every chart or split the time in half between to two of you.

This exercise will help you develop a deeper understanding of Tableau by teaching another person to execute on your vision.

Do you understand Tableau well enough to teach another? We'll find out :)
