Event description

Description

Any career move you make is a big decision — but taking the leap from the established world of corporates to the more uncharted territory of tech startups is one of the bravest professional pivots you can make.

Information is the key to good-decision making, so TechSydney is bringing together people who have made the leap from corporates to startups to discover new and gratifying careers.

We'll hear from a former Microsoft executive who's now the CTO of an expert discovery platform; a former digital marketing agency wonk who co-founded a space-sharing startup; a former Woolworths director of corporate affairs who now runs a communications jobs platform; a serial entrepreneur who logged his time as a consultant; and a recent graduate who shunned her dream of being a corporate exec to accept a job at an online marketing platform.

Whether you've had a long career in corporates and are ready for a change, or are in the early stages of your career and questioning which is the right path for you — come hear the stories of five people who are forging interesting and highly personal careers in the tech industry.

Greg Willis, CTO, OneFlare

Victoria Hempstead, co-founder, altspc

Victoria Hempstead is the marketing director and co-founder of Altspc. Launched in October 2016, Altspc is an alternative space sharing platform that connects under-utilised spaces in existing businesses with freelancers, creatives and startups that require it. One year on (and after taking the leap from her role as social producer at digital marketing agency Web Profits) Victoria sees Altspc reviving Australia's innovation future and becoming the platform that allows entrepreneurs and small business to grow.

Pete McConnell, CEO, Commtract

Prior to founding Commtract, Pete was director of corporate and public affairs for Woolworths. His role included media relations, corporate communications, internal communications, government and industry relations and corporate social responsibility for the Woolworths Limited Group and its trading divisions. He was also a member of its Management Board.

Pete was formerly Chief of Staff to the New South Wales Premier, The Hon. Barry O’Farrell MP. He played an instrumental role in the March 2011 State Election in which the NSW Liberals and Nationals recorded the highest vote since World War II, and oversaw the subsequent transition to Government.
Pete has also worked as an adviser in the Commonwealth Government and as a Management Consultant.

Alon Novy, CEO, ScribblePost

A veteran of software startups (with the scars to prove it!) in both Sydney and Silicon Valley, Alon has been a founder, CTO and CEO. He has also acted as strategic advisor to various other startups and SMEs. Alon is passionate about people, technology and change.

Beatriz de Grano, assistant accountant, DigitalMaas

Beatriz is a fresh graduate from Macquarie University who majored in Finance + Accounting. She works at a tech startup called DigitalMaas, where she loves hunting people down for their receipts and staring at spreadsheets. In her spare time, she offsets her love of baking random cakes with a love of bushwalking.
