Description

Miranda Stewart will present on the effects of budgets and public policy for gender equality, with a particular focus on tax and social policy and the impact on wellbeing of women and families. Miranda will present new research on the position of women at the top and bottom of the income distribution and discuss how tax and social policy intersect to produce unequal outcomes, including the most recent budget into the analysis. The talk will then consider how we can best incorporate a gender equality analysis into budget and policy processes.

Miranda Stewart is a Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute, Australian National University and a Professor at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. Miranda has 25 years of research, practical and leadership experience in tax and social policy in academia, government and the private sector. She engages in research, policy advice and teaching across a wide range of tax policy and law design projects and sectors. Recent research addresses taxation of corporations; budget institutions; gender equality in the tax and transfer system; and resilience, legitimacy and effectiveness of tax systems and tax reform.
