Description

As Australia's leaders in the education of typographic arts, you may have seen us during our partnerings with the National Gallery of Victoria or read about us in the Melbourne Age or Monotype Recorder

With this unique and exciting class, you will work additionally with pen and ink using a speedball nib, as well as a traditional Brush. So you will get to learn two styles, Brush Script lettering, which is the basis of a contemporary design language for which the demand just keeps getting stronger so learning it is a must. You will also learn Single Speed stroke. Both styles of lettering are interchangeable with both tools. Furthermore, more good news! I am excited to let you know that our mini master class attendees receive a fantastic book publication which is yours to keep, packed full of some amazing original exemplars from the School's collection of rare and precious hand lettering books from the 1950's and sixties. This is exceedingly rare, and you won't be able to get your hands on these goodies anywhere else! This taster class is specially created to introduce the hesitant to the whole idea of hand lettering. You won't become an accomplished letterer in this short time, but you will get the foundation as we break your bad writing habits and build good ones. Having taught this style to over 500 students, it's nice to know you are learning from the leaders and trusted teaching professionals. The school director learned the technique in New York from influential Ken Barber of House

This class starts with the basics and is specially created to introduce the hesitant to the whole idea of hand lettering. You won't become an accomplished letterer in this short time, but you will get the foundation as we break your bad writing habits and build good ones.

Brush Script has made a comeback, and is the basis of a contemporary design language that is currently right on trend.
Brush Lettering is a child of mid 20th Century advertising, and was used to create flashy, casual and friendly lettering styles to capture attention. Incorporate an additional tool, and some ink, and you really start to shake things up!

Our 3-hour class is very doable and perfect for those who are new to typography, and designers who are looking to improve their typographic awareness, as well as those who need to switch off from the fast-paced digital world and immerse in something tactile and time-honoured. Going for three hours, this introductory class is a key entry point for those who have entertained the idea of hand lettering and felt unsure about investing in a whole day or whole course. It is an ideal taster to a whole addictive world of letter crafting ! Those who have continued to develop the skill are now enjoying professional success, lettering professionally for special events, and clients. Without doubt in 2017 the trend does not look like it is fading, as more and more brush lettering is appearing in editorial, signage, and identity projects.

How the Class Rolls

The traditional tool for Brush lettering and Brush Script is brush and paint. BUT we recommend that beginners start off using a brush pen. It is similar to using training wheels, being much easier to control, which is something that digital natives who are not used to handling brushes will appreciate as they develop muscle memory and learn the foundation letter shape. From our extensive experience having taught over 500 students, you first need to learn how to draw the letters' curves and shapes correctly (in itself quite challenging for the uninitiated). This builds confidence and scaffolds your learning, before dealing with the brush and paint which is another separate challenge within itself.

Brush Lettering equips you with the essential skills to understand and create typography with flair and meaning. We begin by grasping the componentry which is the basic strokes , which will allow you to gradually develop beautiful letterforms based on these strokes. You will be guided through handy tips and techniques to create the most ideal letters, in terms of weight, shape, space and visual pattern, equipping you to personalise the script to your taste and application. You will also enjoy seeing original examples of brush script to familiarise you with the historical origins of this colourful technique, to give you a context of "why" you are using it.

The demand for authentic, custom analogue lettering over typography is growing being more personalised, and to create this lettering, first you need to gain an unsurpassed typographic eye and a respect for process, patience and time, in learning a skill which is the foundation to enable you to create dazzling custom letterforms.
