Bring your lunch down to the amenities room on Thursday 26 March and listen to Dr Dinusha Mendis discuss the latest findings from a UK IPO commissioned study into the implications of 3D printing which was completed in January 2015 (due for publication in March 2015).

The focus of this talk will be the two main elements of the UK IPO study which are:

  1. the legal and empirical analysis of 3D printing online platforms and an assessment of user behaviour
  2. an analysis of six case studies in the industrial sector

The case studies will be of interest to IP Australia as they consider patents, design, trade marks and copyright in three selected industrial sectors which were:

a)      replacement parts industry - automotive  and domestic

b)      customised goods - jewellery, medical (dental), general consumer goods

c)       high value small status goods - computer generated imagery and goods drawn from computer games

In this study big players such as BMW and smaller companies were interviewed to understand the impact, use and adoption of 3D printing in these industrial sectors and the potential effects on IP.

Dr Dinusha Mendis is an Associate Professor in Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM).  Dinusha
