Event description
The Brisbane Biodiversity Seminars present guest speakers on the city's unique plant and animal species and other environmental topics.

About this event

Brisbane City Council is committed to keeping Brisbane clean, green and sustainable, and values your help in protecting more than 2500 plant and animal species that make Brisbane the most biodiverse capital city in Australia.

Join the Brisbane Biodiversity Seminar, either online or in person, to learn about the little creatures which are often taken for granted, as well as the importance of the habitat that supports them.

Guest speaker, Dr Sandra Tuszynska specialises in soil microbiology with an emphasis on the role of fungi in nutrient cycling and plant protection. Sandra will speak about Enhancing Soil Biology in Bush Regeneration. Sandra believes that understanding the role of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes in plant nutrition and health, in relation to plant succession and weed management, is key to restoring ecosystems.

Helen Schwenke trained as a biologist/ecologist and has been involved in invertebrate conservation since 1986. Her presentation, Addressing Declining Insect Populations, will cover case studies of different butterfly host plants, the diversity & roles of butterflies and other invertebrates in food webs and local actions to implement in your gardens and bushcare sites.

Tina Manners is one of Council’s environmental policy officers within the Biodiversity Conservation Team. Tina will speak about Brisbane’s natural habitat cover and condition, how it is defined and how this is key to documenting our ecological successes on site as well as guiding us where to work jointly to invest our time, money and energy.
