Event description

Description

Bring your family and friends to join us for a three-course Tamil Feast and Afro-Lankan Drumming performance featuring Sri Lankan percussionists Ray Pereira and Kanchana at 7.00 pm on Friday 6th September 2019 at CERES in Brunswick.

Ray and Kanchana have used their wealth of experience and knowledge of both African and Sri Lankan rhythms and dance to come up with a new style of drumming. A style that draws it's influence from both traditions. Their live performances have been described as virtuosic and visceral.

Ray is well known throughout Australia for his work with many leading Australian artists and his pioneering work in West African and Afro-Cuban drumming. In 2002 he met Kanchana who also plays African and Cuban rhythms but is also a master of the Sri Lankan tradition. This led to the birth of the Afrolankan Drumming System.

As well as the Afro-Lankan Drumming performance and Tamil Feast your ticket includes a small donation towards the women's catering kitchen and education facility being built by Bridging Lanka to provide livelihood for war-affected and abandoned women of Adampan in northern Sri Lanka (www.bridginglanka.org).

You have the choice of a three-course Lamb Feast for $50 or three-course Vegetarian Feast for $45 (plus small booking fee) with $20 from every ticket going to support the women's catering kitchen and education facility project. The non-spicy kids meal is $25.

Diners feast upon a traditional banquet of curries, chutneys, vadai, dahl, and masalas made by proud Tamil cooks Richman, Nirma, Niro and Nigethan who started their catering business after becoming friends in detention in Broadmeadows. This is a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant colour, spice and flavour of authentic, organic Tamil cuisine and enjoy this special Afro-Lankan Drumming experience.

There will be raflles and door prizes for extra fun on the night and to raise funds for the women's kitchen project!

Tamil Feast has a bar serving beer, wine, bubbles and a non-alcoholic drinks. Tamil Feasts are served at communal-style and cafe style in an intimate setting. Should you wish to be seated as part of a group please let us know when booking. Be sure to bring along a take-away container (or three!) becasue the kitchen will fill them up for a tip- donation of $7 and you’ll have lunch for the following day!

Bridging Lanka acknowledges the generous support of the Australian Government which provided an Australian Friednship Grant to fund the soft skills training for the women who will operate Cafe Arokkiya (Kitchen and Education Facility).
