BreakThrough special event: "Three Sides of the Coin" presentation and Q&A
Event Information
About this Event
Since 2015, this unique program has helped family members across Victoria better understand addictive behaviours, improve communication and wellbeing, and access appropriate support networks. BreakThrough offers practical strategies and support, and provides an opportunity for family members to connect and learn from each other.
At the moment we are unable to deliver our usual face-to-face program due to Covid-19 restrictions. Online BreakThrough sessions go for 1 hour and cover topics relevant to families who are dealing with a loved one's drug use. Some content will be specific to substance misuse, other material will cover addictive behaviours more broadly.
It's important to note that BreakThrough is an education program and while each session includes group discussion about a particular topic or theme, people requiring more intensive support in relation to their own circumstances are strongly encouraged to contact Family Drug Help on 1300 660 068 to speak to a trained volunteer with personal experience of a loved one's drug use.
Participants registering for online sessions of BreakThrough will be sent a confirmation email with information about how to join the session.
About "Three Sides of the Coin"
Three Sides of the Coin, a gambling harm project, uses storytelling and theatre with people who have been harmed by gambling to destigmatise and deshame gambling, and reframe it as a public health issue.
Pre-Covid, this project involved 20 minute theatrical scenes as a stimulus for discussion to understand the often hidden impacts of gambling, as well as the links between gambling and AOD addiction, mental illness, family violence and crime. With Covid restrictions in place, Three Sides of the Coin has been offering online Zoom sessions to raise awareness of the impact of gambling on our community.
Breakthrough attendees are invited to a ‘lived experience’ presentation about gambling harm and its link to alcohol and other drugs. The session will involve a screening of two short video stories (performed by the protagonists, with music and animation) followed by a Q&A with the storyteller. Stories are told from both the perspective of the person who gambles and the person impacted by another's gambling.
