Event description

Description

Sharing a professional migrant's journey of self-discovery and debunking the myths around how much or how little racial identity factors into career progression and ultimate success.

Seminar Outline: Ignore The Ceiling / Running The One-Horse Race / The Wonders of Goal Setting / Making Informed Decisions / Never Say Die / The Happy Comeback Kid / The Company You Keep

From the organiser:

"I first heard of the term “Bamboo Ceiling” (as opposed to the “Glass Ceiling” for women) two years ago. Over lunch, a colleague (who migrated from Malaysia and now a senior project manager at IBM) congratulated me on breaking through the Bamboo Ceiling, being the most senior manager (of Asian origin) in my division. Like most people, I was happy to accept a compliment intended at recognising the (perceived) extra challenges that I probably had to overcome in order to reach a level of seniority and credibility in my organisation. Our lunch conversation got me thinking about whether I really had to confront challenges specific to my race and status as a migrant to Australia and whether I would have enjoyed even greater success had I stayed in my home country of Singapore. I have organised my thoughts & personal experience on this issue into discussion topics and hopefully provides helpful tips & insights for those of you confronting a similar challenge in your career journey." See you on 7th September at Docklands! Cheers, Peir
