Event description

Description

Hoyne in collaboration with Gather by United Co. are excited to invite you to join them for an exciting panel exploring the future of place.

Our traditional live/work/shop/play landscape has changed and to make a place successful and sustainable today, people must be at the heart of the design process (planning, architecture, interior design, landscaping).

Establishing clear meaning and purpose is integral to ensuring existing communities and new audiences engage and connect with a place. However, heritage is often undervalued or forgotten, when in fact it plays a critical role in ensuring authenticity and an inspiring place story.

Leading voices in urban development, architecture, government, placemaking and marketing including Andrew Hoyne, Hoyne; Siu Chan, City of Yarra; James Fitzgerald, Impact Investment Group and John Wardle, John Wardle Architects, will discuss how great destinations that achieve social and economic success are created.

The objective of this event is to illustrate how to create destinations which offer greater value to the community and improve the overall landscape for the benefit of everyone.

Our Panelists

Panel Chair: Andrew Hoyne

Andrew is the Principal of brand agency Hoyne. They’re a firm of 75 people, and they’ve been in business for 28 years.

Hoyne are well known as a brand and marketing agency, whose core focus is place and property. They work with major Australian and international asset owners, developers and councils to create recognisable landmarks and destinations across Australia, from precincts to cities.

Andrew’s passion for the power of place has led him to produce The Place Economy, a resource book on the social and economic benefits of effective placemaking from around the world.

Volume 2 of The Place Economy is expected to be even more momentous and will be released in March this year.

Siu Chan

Siu Chan has been influential in shaping the cultural life of City of Yarra, championing the arts as an everyday experience and supporting the creative sector. As Unit Manager of Arts, Culture and Venues she has driven innovative initiatives such as Room to Create, aimed at maintaining and growing the availability of creative spaces, plus programs involving the night-time economy, music festivals and international music summits.

James Fitzgerald

James leads the Younghusband, one of Impact Investment Group real estate rejuvenation projects.

Combined with background in advocacy and political science, James is passionate about the intersection between design, technology and social change. He is committed to impact investment as a major change pathway for values-aligned individuals and businesses.

As a Chartered Professional Engineer, James developed significant experience in designing and delivering major civil projects in roads, rail, urban water and natural resource management at both WorleyParsons and Alluvium Consulting.

Recently, James was Director of Business Development at Engineers Without Borders Australia, Australia’s largest humanitarian engineering organisation. In this role, he was responsible for securing major long-term partnerships with government and the corporate sector, leading the organisation’s 2020 Strategy, and transforming the volunteer network.

John Wardle

Founded in 1986, John Wardle’s award-winning architectural practice undertakes a broad range of project types and scales, across three Australian states. The portfolio includes single houses, apartment towers, university campus buildings, commercial towers and office fit-outs. The residential work of John Wardle Architects focuses on inhabitation, landscape and detail, in dialogue with the practice’s larger commissions.

- bringing a collaborative attitude and a shared desire to support each other’s efforts

- being intentional about our use of technology whilst gathering
