Event description
Join us at BRAG for our Art History Lectures on Art and Changing World Pictures with Emeritus Professor, Richard Read.

About this Event

International Emeritus Professor, Richard Read will deliver four lectures on Art and Changing World Pictures at BRAG. Each lecture offers a visual analyses of four great works of Western art to chart, with sidelights from non-Western art, how the Classical, Byzantine, Medieval and early Renaissance representations of the universe transformed into each other over many centuries.

In the third of four lectures on Art and Changing World Pictures, Professor Read focuses on Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fourteenth-century fresco of Allegory of Good and Bad Government in the town hall at Siena to show how visual thinkers turned their minds to the worldly consequences of Christian spirituality by dramatizing the alternatives between social order and tyranny in a city-republic of the late Medieval period. Articulating a worldview that is unique to its time, Lorenzetti embodied three concepts of enduring importance to the history of art: allegory, political propaganda and perspective.

Richard Read is Emeritus Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, Perth. He wrote the first book on the British art critic Adrian Stokes and has published extensively on the relationship between literature and the visual arts, nineteenth and twentieth-century art, film, art theory and complex images in global contexts. His anthology of essays on Colonization, Wilderness and Other Spaces: Nineteenth-Century American and Australian Landscape Painting, co-edited with Kenneth Haltman will be published by the University of Chicago Press in February 2020 and The Heritage of Molyneux’s Question in Landscape Painting and Aesthetic Thought is under contract with Cambridge University Press for publication in 2021. He has lectured in many universities and galleries in Australia, North America and Europe.
