Boosting your career with social media

Having a social media profile is part of a career today. Just about everyone has some kind of footprint on the internet – in fact having no presence can seem a little strange. This workshop helps you to craft a positive presence that will boost your career in the right direction.

Building your social media presence takes time and practice – explosive viral hits don’t come out of nowhere, and may not come at all. But with a bit of thought and effort you can give yourself the best chance to say the right thing in the right place at the right time.

We’ll cover:

* Choosing which social media stream(s) to focus on

* Separating work from play

* Locating your tribe

* Finding your authentic voice

* What to feed the monster – text, shares, multimedia, livestream

* Dealing with trolls.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants a social media profile that showcases their research and impresses future bosses.

The Presenter Dr Phil Dooley, freelance science writer, presenter and videomaker

From childhood dreams of being an astronomer, Dr Phil Dooley progressed to a PhD in laser physics. After a stint as an IT trainer, he returned to science as a communicator, where he could talk about the fun stuff without the heavy-duty equations.

In his career he has taken bored teenage school kids on physics excursions at University of Sydney; created digital content for the international fusion research organisation, JET; been schooled by a battle-hardened Reuters hack in the ANU media office and written for prominent science publishers Nature and Cosmos Magazine.

He regularly MCs Science in the Pub events, and has performed solo in shows and festivals from Adelaide to London, blending music, stand up comedy, fairytales and live science demos. He runs a YouTube channel, Phil Up On Science.

Dr Phil is a qualified professional trainer, with a Certificate IV in Workplace training and assessment, and is National Vice-President of Australian Science Communicators.
