Event description

Description

Plastic bags are made from oil and never break down. The cloth bag you make with us, and the creating and repairing skills you learn, will last you a lifetime. Bring your own fabric (non stretchy, and not too thick eg pillow case, doona cover, table cloth ) or you choose from our pieces to cut, iron, and sew in to a Boomerang Bag reusable shopping bag with Kate Wake.

The workshop can supply some machines to share on the day but it's great if you can bring your own. If you have a working sewing machine please bring it and we can support you using it. You don't need to know how to sew, that's what we're there for. We run inclusive workshops and welcome participants from 12+ years. Bring a friend, a partner, a parent, a neighbour, even your football team, book club or . All experience levels are welcomed.

You will learn how to measure, cut, iron, pin and sew a bag from scratch and take home a unique bag that's a world saver and conversation starter.

ABOUT BOOMERANG BAGS:

Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community driven movement that was founded by Tania Potts and Jordyn de Boer at Burleigh Heads back in 2013. Through Boomerang Bags, volunteers create friendships, upcycle fabric, learn new skills and collectively reduce the use of single-use disposable plastic items, most notably bags. Bags can be made solo at home, with a group of friends or family, in the classroom, as a school or workplace activity, or at a public venue with the wider community.

ABOUT KATE WAKE:

Kate Wake is a devoted inner westie known for being the architect behind the world's first permanent DIY chalk rainbow crossing, the Summer Hill Rainbow Crossing. Kate is also known for starting the environmental nfp unwaste where she works on all things waste related. She also turns old things into new things and gives new life to fabric rescued from landfill. Kate will help attendees make their own resusable fabric shopping bag, regardless of their sewing skills. Kate learned to sew on her grandmother's treadle sewing machine and has been sewing Boomerang Bags for over a year. Kate has worked with sewers of all skill levels across Sydney.
