Event Details

This writing workshop forms part of a series of monthly writing workshops run in partnership with the ACT Writers Centre . All workshops in this series are suitable for new and emerging writers over the age of 16+.

All the best fiction writing is underpinned by world building. Good fantasy and science fiction writing often requires world-creation. This course takes you through key issues that must be considered to build a world for a novel.

 We will discuss:

  • the enormous differences between the world the reader sees and the one the writer knows;
  • what sources you can use to access that past or to create a world; and
  • what writing techniques that will make the world your characters move through feel more real.

It is impossible in a single workshop to cover everything a writer needs. This workshop will, however, provide a solid introduction.

 Gillian Polack is an Australian writer, editor and educator working mainly in the field of genre fiction. She has published six novels in the US and Australia, numerous short stories and nonfiction articles and several non-fiction books. She has PhDs in History and in Creative Writing. Her most recent book on the work of writers is History and Fiction (2016).
