About this Event

ABOUT THE BOOK

Jean recalls in remarkable detail the big and small events of Australian 20th century life: her school years during World War I, the growth of Mayfield and Newcastle, domestic life in the early 20th century, her training and work as a midwife in the slums of Sydney and country NSW, life in the country towns of Warialda and Moree in northern NSW during World War II, and her unhappy marriage and bringing up four children. But also, Mayfield Girl is Jean’s brave and honest account of her personal battle with a family secret which, when revealed, devastated her life for years to come.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jean Sharp grew up in working class Mayfield, Newcastle, NSW, in the shadow of the BHP steelworks. Her life spanned the steelworks’ very beginnings to nearly its closure in 1999. But she had been born in remote far North-Western NSW and her traumatic childhood was a sad legacy for her all her life.

ABOUT THE EDITOR

Stephen Wallace AM is a filmmaker best known for Love letters from Teralba Road, Stir, Turtle Beach, Blood Oath and Prisoners of the Sun.
