Event description

Description

Are you a primary school teacher or librarian?

Join us at The Little Bookroom to chat about books for primary aged readers over some nibbles and a drink.

We'll bring you up to speed on key new releases, point out upcoming titles to keep on your radar and generally share recommendations over great Lit-Circle reads.

It's a bookclub without the homework beforehand!

We have two guests for the evening:

Ingrid Laguna is a writer, teacher and musician. She teaches English to children and adults from all over the world, many of whom have refugee backgrounds.

Ingrid's novel Songbird is about Jamila, who has left her friends, her school and her home in Iraq, and now has a new home. It's safe in Australia, but Jamila is finding it hard to settle in. She misses her best friend and worries for her dad's safety back in Iraq. It's hard to speak and write in English all day. And Jamila has a secret she wants to keep hidden.

When she joins the choir, Jamila begins to feel happy. Singing helps take her worries away. And singing will help her find her place in her new life, a place where she can shine.

Songbird is a tender story about belonging, about the importance of friendship and asking for help, and about the parts of our lives we keep concealed.

Jessica Sanders is the author of Love Your Body

What if every young girl loved her body?

Freedom is loving your body with all its "imperfections" and being the perfectly imperfect you!

Love Your Body is an empowering guide for girls to support the development of positive body image. In this book, girls are encouraged to view their body as an incredible instrument that allows them to do, see and feel. The concept of self-love is introduced and practical self-care tips are included to build resilience and emotional intelligence.

This book was written for every girl, regardless of whether or not they are exhibiting signs of negative body image. We are living in an incredibly visual world and unfortunately it’s becoming increasingly hard for girls to escape internalising the pressure of perfection. Prevention is key: every girl deserves to be taught about self-love and self-acceptance.

Love Your Body encourages girls to do more and see more through empowering illustrations that show girls exploring, creating and embracing who they are.

The powerful illustrations by Carol Rossetti show truly diverse characters celebrating their different bodies. So-called ‘imperfections’ (such as stretch marks, pimples and cellulite) are shown in order to normalise characteristics which, though completely natural, are not usually portrayed in children’s books or popular media.
