Event description

Description

CDAH welcomes you to join us for a workshop with Bob Jackson - ‘Building Belonging’. This workshop will explore how to build belonging, inclusion and citizenship in our communities - for people with disability, family members, friends, supporters and service providers.

Inclusion and belonging doesn't happen just because the NDIS is here. At CDAH, we have a passion for community change and acting locally... join us and together we can work on real examples to lift the barriers to people's lives so that we can all hold our heads high as citizens.

We all know what it feels like to be included, and how it feels to be excluded and rejected. Everyone has a role in helping to change the face of inclusion in the Hunter. Join this workshop so together we can work out how to make it happen. Bob will delve into the essential ingredients for belonging; ideas and tools for making real and practical changes that can transform lives; and where, how and when people can gain that sense of belonging.

We will consider how people with disability, their families and supporters can creatively and intentionally build a full life in the community and what communities can do to support inclusion. Participants will explore ‘community’ and ‘inclusion’ to understand things that are more or less likely to achieve community inclusion. Topics will include:

  • rethinking the issue

  • inclusion in the community - relationships and contribution

  • the building blocks of community inclusion

  • tools to create a vision

About Bob Jackson: Associate Professor Bob Jackson has worked in disability services since the early 1970s working as a psychologist, institution superintendent, service manager and Regional Director with the WA Disability Services Commission. From 1995, Professor Jackson has been closely involved with school inclusion, advising families, teachers, schools and education systems on the rationale and practicalities of inclusion. This work has included a very extensive review of the literature on inclusion as well as presentations in all Australian states to parents and teachers.
