Blume Illustrated Workshops: Introduction to Illustration

Chris Neilson and Greg Bakes are award winning illustrators with a wide range of skills and experience as professional illustrators and this is a unique opportunity to learn the basics of this fascinating art form with two masters of their craft.
So what is illustration? Most people think immediately of children picture books - but there is a whole lot more to the fascinating world of contemporary illustration. “Illustration” from the word to Illuminate and can be defined as creating images that to bring ideas to light. Generally illustration is art that is designed for reproduction - traditionally in the print mediums, but more generally today illustration finds it’s way into posters, books, editorial images for newspapers magazines and web, technical and scientific illustration, advertising, merchandising and for animation and motion graphics.
You will take a look at the work of artists working in many areas of contemporary illustration as well as some of the masters from the past and explore hands on, the basic processes and techniques used to produce a finished illustration that is ready for print or reproduction.
Part 1: Greg and Chris will present an introduction to what illustration is, illustrated with some of their own work and the work of the masters of illustration. To follow there will be a series of exercises in which you will investigate the basic techniques of creating and refining illustrations to interpret and illuminate ideas through image and text.
Part 2: Each participant will develop an illustrative response to a creative brief using a combination of basic illustration techniques. Greg and Chris will provide individual feedback and one on one guidance to each participant to enable a solid understanding of the basic illustration techniques and processes and to develop confidence in combining images with text into artwork that is print ready.
Participants should have some basic experience of art and have an enthusiasm and curiosity to explore the art of illustration.
Materials: Paper and various materials and mediums will be provided.

There is plenty of parking at Coles carpark in Parke Street or surrounding streets for BMCC workshops. 5 min walk from train station: Katoomba.

Tickets numbers are strictly limited: Up to 30 days before the event: 50% refund. 30 days to 14 days before the event 30% refund. 14 days and less prior to the event - no refund.
