Artist Dr Fiona Foley speaks about her book 'Biting the Clouds' at Tweed Regional Gallery. In partnership with the Byron Writers Festival.

About this event

The Gallery is delighted to host Dr Fiona Foley in conversation with Cheryl Leavy as part of the Byron Writers Festival 2022.

Fiona Foley is a visual artist and academic. Her publication, Biting the Clouds, is a groundbreaking work of Indigenous scholarship that addresses the inherent silences, errors and injustices from the perspective of the Badtjala people of K’gari (Fraser Island). Fiona shines a critical light on the little-known colonial-era practice of paying Indigenous workers in opium and the ‘solution’ of then displacing them to K’gari.

Kooma and Nguri woman Cheryl Leavy is an Executive Director of the Queensland Government working on First Nations Policy and a member of the Brisbane Writers Festival board. Cheryl’s country is in southern inland Queensland between Cunnamulla and St George.

Session time 11.00am - 12.00pm Friday 26 August 2022 | Free
