We Are Here: Talking with Australia’s Oldest Holocaust Survivors

In Conversation with Fiona Harari and Meredith Jaffé

When Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, he quickly began to realise his dream of a racially superior nation free of ‘inferior’ groups. His goal included the eradication of European Jewry, a plan that would ultimately claim six million lives.

For those who survived, liberation came with the enormous weight of guilt and memory as they began the second part of their lives, often in faraway places such as Australia. Now the last of those adult survivors have reached an age once considered unattainable. Fiona Harari tells the stories of eighteen of these Australians, originally from all over Europe, discovering what it is like to have lived through those tumultuous years.

Fiona Harari is an award-winning journalist who has worked for Time (Australia) magazine and was a senior writer with The Australian newspaper before becoming a full time freelancer. She is the author of A Tragedy in Two Acts: Marcus Einfeld and Teresa Brennan.

Meredith Jaffé is an author, presenter and facilitator. She spent four years as the literary critic for the online women’s magazine, The Hoopla, writing the weekly column, The Bookshelf. Her reviews, author interviews, feature articles and opinion pieces have appeared in The Hoopla, Australian Author, The Guardian Australia, The Huffington Post and Mamamia. Meredith is the author of The Fence and The Making of Christina.
