BirdLife Western Australia - Annual General Meeting
Event Information
About this event
Island birds are the most imperilled vertebrates on the planet. The biggest threats to island species are habitat loss and the invasion of mammalian predators.
The Abrolhos subspecies of the Painted Button-quail has been highlighted as the fifth most likely bird to go extinct in the next 20 years with a 71% likelihood of extinction. It has historically inhabited three islands in the Houtman Abrolhos archipelago, but is now likely extinct on North Island. The introduction of House Mouse, Tammar Wallabies and a subsequent decline in vegetation condition are attributed to the decline of APBQ.
My project aims to verify the status of APBQ on North Island through camera trapping and vegetation cover analysis. I also aim to determine the factors that influence their habitat selection on the remaining populations on East Wallabi and West Wallabi Islands.
