Event description

Description

The BirdLife Powerful Owl project would like to invite you along from 1:30 to 2:30pm for a presentation on Owl identification, biology, & ecology. For those who would like to become volunteer citizen scientists, we invite you to stay on from 2:30 to 3:30pm to get more details on the project, to get permits, sign-up formally, and to go over how we will be monitoring Powerful Owls in 2019. Participants are welcome to just come at 2:30 if you attended an introductory workshop previously or are already familiar with owls.

The project aims to monitor Powerful Owls in southeast Queensland and is modelled after the highly successful Powerful Owl project in Sydney http://birdlife.org.au/projects/powerful-owl-project. The Powerful Owl project has proven to be one which effectively monitors this threatened species and delivers concrete management recommendations to help protect owls. In Brisbane we started the project last year and 147 people helped locate 78 Powerful Owl locations in southeast Queensland, and observed eleven young owls at seven nesting hollows. This next year we hope to find more nesting hollows.

This project is proudly supported by The Wettenhall Environment Trust, The Australian Bird Environment Foundation and has previously been supported by Logan City Council and by Brisbane City Council.
