Description

Birdcage of the Bay: Commissariat Store Tour with RHSQ

Join the Royal Historical Society of Queensland for a tour of the Commissariat Store on William Street, Brisbane City. The Commissariat Store is Queensland’s oldest habitable, and most significant heritage building. The lower two floors of this magnificent building were convict built during 1828 and 1829. The third floor, now the main entrance from William Street was added in 1913.

The Royal Historical Society of Queensland has worked with Queensland State Archives as part of the current Birdcage of the Bay: St Helena Island Prison exhibibition. This exhibition showcases a recreation of the St Helena Prison stockade, using plans from the collection of the Queensland State Archives and other historical sources to show the extent of the prison establishment and its myriad of prisoner stories. From unique island records and objects through to discoveries and a virtual reality recreation, this exhibition is an opportunity to catch glimpses of life at the St Helena Island Prison beyond the walls of the visitor box. The exhibition will be open at Queensland State Archives until 6 September 2019.
