Description

Billie Hunter is the RCM Professor of Midwifery at Cardiff University in Wales UK and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Midwifery Development in Europe. A Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives UK, she was previously Professor of Midwifery at Swansea University (2006-2012) and holds Visiting Chairs at Universities of Surrey, Nottingham and UTS in Sydney, Australia.

Billie has been a midwife since 1979, working in NHS, voluntary sector and independent midwifery settings, before moving into education and research in 1996. Billie’s research focuses on culture, emotions and relationships in maternity care. Her aim is to improve care for women and their families by better understanding midwifery work and supporting midwives. She is particularly well known for her research into midwives’ emotional wellbeing and resilience. Current research projects include a study of peer support for breastfeeding, an oral history of place of birth 1948-1970 and, in collaboration with Griffiths University Queensland, a survey of the Work, Health and the Emotional Lives of UK Midwives (UK WHELM).

A member of many maternity and research-related committees, Billie has published widely. Her recent books include: ‘Supporting Women for Labour and Birth: A Thoughtful Guide’ (Leap N and Hunter B 2016) and ‘The Midwife’s Tale’ (Leap N and Hunter B 2013).
