Bilingual Kabuki Workshop
For Nonprofessionals: Playing Narukami
No Experience Necessary!
A Rare Chance to Get a Taste of One of the World’s Most Flamboyant Theatrical Genres!
Narukami (鳴神), one of the Eighteen Best Kabuki Plays (Kabuki Jūhachiban; 歌舞伎十八番) collection, premiered in 1684 and, since its revival in 1910, has remained popular for its unique depiction of the awesome, superhuman priest Narukami and his inability to resist the seductive wiles of Princess Taema.
Seikei University has invited kabuki players from the Zenshinza Theatre Company, one of Japan’s oldest theatre troupes, to serve as instructors for a workshop aimed at nonprofessionals interested in kabuki. Participants will be taught to play roles in Narukami bothin English and in Japanese. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in kabuki’s world-famous physical and vocal techniques by cutting powerful mie poses and reciting the rhythmic lines!
Please wear comfortable clothes. Dressing booths will be provided onsite.
