Event description

Description

The Bike School Holiday Program for Teenagers is a two day bicycle confidence, skills and awareness training program for young people aged 13 to 16 years to prepare them for on road riding and independent travel, commissioned by the City of Boroondara and run by Bikes at Work.

Day 1 of the course is run in a traffic-free area and will focus on basic bike skills including preparation for riding, riding safely, safety checks, emergency stopping, using gears, scanning, signalling, riding on different surfaces, road rules & signs, basic maintenance and a puncture repair session.

Day 2 includes a component of instructed on-road training on low traffic quiet roads, plus a basic bike maintenance session including tools, fit and positioning, detailed safety checks, minor adjustments, cleaning the bike, removing the wheel and replacing an inner tube.

Participants will need to:

 Have basic bike riding skills

 Be able to ride on two wheels independently

 Bring their bike and helmet in roadworthy condition

Who is this course aimed at and what will they learn?

This two day course is for young people aged 13-16 years who have basic bike control skills. Participants will develop their bike skills and increase their confidence, road safety and traffic awareness. They will also learn basic bike maintenance and be guided to make a trip on quiet local streets.

How will they learn?

The sessions are taught by experienced AustCycle-qualified instructors from Bikes at Work. All instructors have Working with Children Checks and First Aid qualifications. A council representative will be present at both days. The program will be taught through instruction, demonstration, practice, games and challenges. Day 1 comprises group training for all participants. Day 2 comprises a short on-road ride on local streets with two instructors per group of 7 children as well as a basic bike maintenance session.

Does my child need to attend both days?

Yes. In order for young people to join the on-road ride on Day 2, they will need to demonstrate suitable skill and behaviour on Day 1. In the unlikely event that the child is not suitable for the on road ride, parents will be informed at the end of Day 1 that their child will not be allowed to join the on road component of the training on Day 2, but will be welcome at the bike maintenance section after lunch and can stay with the council representative during the on road ride. We ask that all registrants commit to attending both days of training to allow your child to experience the key objective of riding safely on quiet streets.

What should my child bring?

 Their bicycle in good condition with working brakes, a bell and pumped up tyres

 Their helmet

 Runners or similar closed-toe footwear

 Sun/weather protection

 A bottle of water

 Lunch and snacks

 Any medication

 Suitable clothing

What is the start/finish time?

The program will take place between 10am-2.30pm on both days. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in and prepare your bike.

Where should we come for the training?

The program will take place at Kew High School, 1393 Burke Road, Kew East. You will be sent a reminder email with these details a few days before the session.

What facilities are there at the location?

Toilets, water and undercover areas will be available.

What if the weather isn’t great?

The training will only be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts very wet, very windy or very hot weather. In this event, we will contact you 2 hours’ prior to the start time and your registration fee will be refunded. If weather conditions deteriorate after training has begun, training activities may be modified or omitted or the session terminated to minimise health and safety risks. We will contact you and ask you to collect your child, if possible. Otherwise we will wait with them until 2.30pm.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket?

You don't need to bring your ticket on the day. We will have a list of registered participants.
