Term 2 | 12 May – 16 June

Created in response to requests from students, term two of Big Art Adventures will incorporate clay work, creating a sculptural relief in plaster, working with watercolours and making with wood and wires.

Clay is fascinating and it lends itself to any skill level. There is always more to try out with clay. Since the earliest times, humans have had a close association with clay, both utilitarian and decorative. It’s a wonderful naturally occurring material. Watercolour has also been around since painting began; for example, the printmaker Albrecht Durer found the medium ideal for small details and studies. Unlike drawing and printmaking papers, watercolour paper contains sizing, which reduces the absorption of paint into the paper itself. The pigments remain on the surface of the paper, so the colours remain brilliant.

This six week course aims to take students through an ‘art process’. The program starts three dimensionally exploring clay, using hands as well as other tools for modelling. Experimentation and observation are highly encouraged and this knowledge will be useful to students creating their own sculptural relief masterpieces. Interested students can further explore building up the clay surface; the depth and width of printing into clay or building up the clay will affect the final design in plaster, so it’s a great ‘cause and effect’ adventure. Further along in the workshop, some students may wish to explore the quality and delicacy of using watercolours on watercolour paper or explore being inventive with pieces of wood and a variety of wires (safely, of course).

Content >

12 May:
Experiment with learning a few techniques using clay, and then explore printing a variety of depths and widths into the clay using various textures and forms, as well as adding items and cutting out spaces. Create a test sample to be cast in plaster.

19 May:
Sketch a design for your sculptural relief masterpiece! Print and model your design into the clay base. Design your border, create your hanging mechanism and attach, then cast in plaster.

26 May & 2 June:
Reveal your plaster relief. Decide on its surface treatment, colour and decorate with special finishes. Explore the colour wheel briefly then use watercolours on watercolour papers. Create a background and then its foreground.

9 June:
What can you create with wood pieces and wires? We’ll also continue with watercolour painting.

16 June:
Complete all work for end of term display/exhibition.
