Term 1 | 17 February – 24 March

Look in a mirror and draw your face. Colour with pastels, washes of inks, paints or collage it. Create the face you might like to wear! Will it be an animal, insect, funny monster or an imaginative face? Explore making your design three dimensionally, then create a fabulously unique mask from it that you can wear. Does your mask tell a story? Design a way to show it off! This workshop is a hands-on art workshop experience with individual guidance and explanation of techniques as the activities progress. The activities will be adapted to individual abilities within the group and more technical instruction/challenges given for older students.

Drawing a self-portrait is a great way to learn how to draw the human head with its shapes, forms, proportions and expressions. The face has inspired artists throughout the centuries, like Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt, who both drew themselves out of interest and to practice drawing or painting the human head. Van Gogh did many self-portraits and could capture that “inner feeling” on paper; drawing a face requires close observation. Artists have also been inspired by observing animals, insects or drawing from their imagination.

This six week course aims to take students through an ‘art process’. The program starts two-dimensionally, exploring drawing and some observational techniques that can be added to the student’s own drawing repertoire. The process continues with hand and tool modelling of air-drying clay, to develop a unique design for a face/head. Students can create a cast from their clay design from which a unique mask can be created.
