Event description

Description

Beyond the Wall is a ninety-minute chamber opera (with interval) created specifically for young audiences and families.

Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s short story,The Selfish Giant, the opera revolves around the character of Evie, a young castaway, who arrives with her young brother Dash at the shore of a mysterious place in the middle of the night. When they both wake, they discover an enormous walled garden full of magical creatures and hidden perils. Evie learns the story of the garden and the actions of the vengeful Giant, and enters into a race against time to save her brother and herself from magical enslavement. Along the way, she also learns she perhaps has deeper ties to this magical place. Could Evie be the child the Garden has been waiting for?

Children and parents are invited to come and join in the magical experience of this child-centred piece, and even have the chance to sing and create magic themselves with the performers. The atmosphere is intended to be informal, with an intended audience age of K-year 6. Younger children are of course welcome. A prologue to the opera is included in which one of the main characters talks to the children about the piece, inviting them to join in in selected parts and putting them at ease as to their involvement. This is a semi staged performance with reduced set and costuming.

Please reserve a ticket for all people attending (including children) so we have a clear view of audience size.

PLEASE NOTE: On Friday 15th December a steadicam operator will be filming the performance. Although he will be focussing on the performance on stage, due to the nature of the show and elements of audience participation there is the chance that members of the audience may be captured on film. This video will be utilised for examination purposes and be present in its entirety in the final PhD exegesis. Any images captured will not be used for promotional purposes in the future unless first obtaining written consent from the persons involved.
