Overview

Practical strategies to support PhD candidates' impact trajectory while completing their thesis.

This interactive workshop introduces supervisors to holistic approaches for preparing doctoral candidates to generate societal impact through their research. Drawing from scholarship on research supervision, participants will explore the Supervision for Societal Impact Ecosystem (SSIE) framework - a practical tool for embedding impact-oriented skills throughout the doctoral journey.

The workshop addresses how supervisors can support candidates to develop capabilities in stakeholder engagement, research translation, and impact generation while maintaining focus on thesis completion.

Topics include:

  • Fostering an impact mindset from day one
  • Building candidates' skills in communicating with non-academic audiences
  • Supporting industry and community engagement
  • Developing candidates' public profiles and professional networks
  • Balancing thesis progress with broader impact activities

Through guided discussion, participants will consider the SSIE framework in their supervisory contexts and reflect on strategies for implementing a holistic approach to doctoral supervision.

*Please note this workshop is for Deakin University researchers only.
