Beyond Cancer Support Groups offer a unique space for cancer survivors to find support and encouragement to create their "new normal".
I have discovered that the survivorship stage of the cancer journey is somewhat overlooked. The visible wounds have healed, the treatment has been finalised and you have been given the okay by your doctors to reclaim your life again. Family and friends have returned to their normal lives and there may be an expectation for you to do the same, but your ‘normal’ has changed. For many survivors it's been a time to reevaluate values and beliefs, lifestyle choices, attitudes and behavious, dreams and desires. For other survivors it's also about living with their cancer in some shape or form.
Facing our own mortality can be one of the scariest times we may ever encounter but it can also be one of the most inspirational. It becomes clear to us how valuable our time here really is and so we want to make sure we are living a quality life everyday doing what we value most.
Beyond Cancer is not about Battling or Fighting cancer. My desire is to provide a space for people to share their cancer journey and with the support of the group move peacefully into a new, more enriched and fulfilled life. This can be achieved through the discovery of your greatest desires and creating goals within the group that will move you toward your new life. In essence, the group is simply about making the most of the life we have on any given day.
Regular guest speakers will present on various topics encouraging you to make the best choices for yourself beyond cancer; nutritional advice, career counselling, goal setting, exercise, complementary therapies, medical discussions to name a few. We will also provide valuable education and support for worry and anxiety that surrounds recurrence, follow up appointments, anniversaries and other triggers as well as coping strategies for emotional and physical pain.
