Description

Annual Clare Valley Beyond Bank Benchmark Tasting. Focusing on Cabernet and Cabernet blends

Meet the Panel

Alex MacKenzie - Chief Winemaker, Annies Lane Wines

Melbourne born and bred, Alex developed a fond affection for the Clare Valley following regular childhood visits to the picturesque wine region to see his grandparents. Alex discovered his passion for wine when he was 16, whilst living in the Rhône Valley as an exchange student with a French family. Inspired by the art and mystique of wine production. Returning to Australia, Alex decided in 1996 to pursue a course in Viticulture at University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus. Alex remains heavily involved in all facets of the vineyard and its influence on winemaking styles. Working with different varieties, climates and subregions of the Clare Valley ensure Alex is extremely enthusiastic about the quality of Clare Valley wines.

Nick Ryan - Wine Writer, Wine Judge, Wine Educator

Thrown out of university in Adelaide and moving to Sydney, Nick Ryan used the knowledge he’d gained raiding his old man’s cellar to land a job with one of Sydney’s leading wine merchants. Realising that writing about it was easier than lifting it has led him to where he is now. He’s a regular contributor to Men’s Style Australia and Gourmet Traveller Wine and has judged in many Australian and international wine shows. He is excited by wines that are just as interesting by the fourth glass as they are at the first and would give it all up to play one game for the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Peter Bissell - Winemaker, Balnaves of Coonawarra

BSc Hons (1st Class) in Biochemistry 1982. Diploma in Oenology & Viticulture 1988, Roseworthy College, South Australia. Pete began winemaking as part of his honors thesis, looking at colour extraction in Pinot Noir wines in the new cool climate region of Canterbury, New Zealand in 1981. Pete then spent a year and a half in France working as assistant oenologist for A Moueix et Fils in Libourne who owns Ch. Fonplegade (St Emilion) and Chateau Mouline
