Event description

Description

From May 22nd to May 24th, Reef Catchments will host the 3-Day Better Bull Selection Course – Breeding Better Profits. Reef Catchments will subsidise farmers to attend the course, once more than 15 producers have registered.

Combining the latest in research and development with practical know-how, this course is designed to integrate new knowledge into your breeding program to help improve your bottom line.

We invite landholders to join John Bertram and Alan Laing, leaders in the field of genetic gain and reproduction in the beef industry.

John Bertram is an expert in bull fertility, breeding, genetics and herd bull selection. He is well known for his extension work providing guidance and technical advice to landholders, veterinary services and industry bodies across Australia.

A pre-purchase bull fertility assessment should include appearance (structure, feet etc), microscopic test for semen quality and morphology, a detailed examination of his genetic merit and pedigree information.

John believes genetics and better management are two areas beef producers can influence, with major long-term impacts on profit and sustainability.

We encourage interested graziers to secure their spot asap. Registration closes cob Monday 13th May.

BENEFITS OF BUYING BETTER BULLS

  • Produce more calves per bull
  • Produce progeny that grow faster
  • Produce progeny that have desirable carcass traits
  • Produce future breeders that will in turn produce more valuable offspring
  • Produce animals that repeatedly meet market specifications
Better bulls have a number of impacts on a herd:
  • For the years they are in the herd, these bulls will sire superior male and female progeny
  • Improvements using genetics are permanent and will continue to accumulate as high performing sires are selected
  • All these advantages auger well to minimise beef producers’ risk and increase the enterprise
