Description

Benzodiazepines are widely used and one of the most commonly misused classes of pharmaceutical drugs in Australia, with concerns increasing in regards to both misuse and dependence. This event will discuss benzodiazepine prescribing practices, dependency, associated harms, and reduction programs.

Presenters

Dr. Paul MacCartney - An experienced Alcohol and Other Drug GP, RACGP presenter, pharmacotherapy prescriber and GP Mentor – cohealth, Fitzroy.

Dr. Sebastian Jungnickel - An Advanced Addiction Psychiatry Registrar, working for Drug Health Services - Western Hospital, Footscray.

Erin Oldenhof - Benzodiazepine counsellor supporting people with dependency to reduce or cease use – Reconnexion, Malvern.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise benzodiazepine dependence and the associated harms and risks
  • Implement safe and effective benzodiazepine prescribing, tapering and treatment protocols, as part of a broader management plan
  • Respond effectively to drug seeking behaviours in general practice
  • Utilise available resources and services to assist with benzodiazepine presentations in general practice
