Event description

Description

This 4 week painting course provides 12 hours of expert tuition by award-winning artist Jan Lawnikanis. Jan has been teaching art classes and workshops continuously for the last 24 years and is a sought-after tutor for many art societies and art organisations.

Students will learn various techniques in a range of subject matter and styles while using just 3 primary colours to create all other colours. References to trace will be provided to save time for painting.

Although this course is designed for beginners in watercolour, it will also benefit those who want to get back-to-basics and those who desire instruction in the knowledge and practise of colour mixing.

What can I bring into the event?

MATERIALS LIST

‘These materials requirements are of a quality to enable you to get the most out of your learning experience, because I have found that Inferior products always result in frustration and disappointment. All of these materials will last way beyond the duration of the classes and are ideal for any of my other lessons and workshops.’ Jan

PAINTS:

Just 3 tubes of paint!

But these colours are very important as they are the correct primary colours for mixing every other hue. Choose between: Maimeri Blu brand – Primary Yellow, Primary Red Magenta and Primary Blue Cyan; OR Holbein brand – Permanent Yellow Light, Quinacridone Red and Phthalo Blue Yellow Shade; OR Daniel Smith brand – Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Rose and Phthalo Blue Green Shade. All of these brands are 12-15ml tubes so you will have plenty of paint to create your palette of 12 colours. You may substitute between the brands if you can’t get all 3 colours in the same brand.

PALETTE: I recommend a plastic palette with at least 12 large wells to hold your mixed colours, plus extra spaces. The large palettes with a lid are the best.

PAPER: 300gsm 100% cotton watercolour paper, Medium (Cold Pressed) texture. This can be either in sheets, a pad or a block. You may get a shock as to the cost, but the cheaper papers made from cellulose just don’t work well with watercolour.

BRUSHES: Must be designated watercolour brushes. At least 2 different sizes, one small and one larger, both ‘rounds, plus a hake or wash brush.

ALSO BUY: One sheet of graphite transfer paper, A4 size. A kneadable eraser. Masking tape. 2B pencil or a mechanical pencil.

TO BRING FROM HOME: Tissues, an old towel or hand towel or face cloth, 2 plastic containers for water (1kg yogurt tubs or similar), pen and paper for writing notes. BYO coffee mug if you like to have a hot drink during class.

Boards are provided, along with painting references and handouts of information. Tea, coffee etc is complimentary.

PLEASE NOTE: The Holbein paints and other equipment is available to buy as a whole kit from Cutters Art Yard. This is at a discounted student price for this course.
