TECHNOLOGY IN DESIGN

Our next CPD Seminar will deal with technology that impacts the design process. Presentations will be on 3D Laser Scanning, Drone technology, and factoring in WiFi during the design phase.

DRONE TECHNOLOGY

The use of drones for commercial and recreational purposes has surged in popularity and affordability in recent years. A presenter from National Drones will talk about Drone technology, and the rules for flying drones in Australia. National Drones is Australia's largest Civil Aviation Safety Authority certified aerial data solutions provider, with highly-skilled operators and apparatus across Australia. They service a vast range of industries, including the building and construction industry, across both residential and non-residential projects.

3D LASER SCANNING

This presentation, by Matt Trevaskis from Spiire, is tailored to an architectural / building / BIM audience. Matt will cover:

  • What is 3D laser scanning?
  • Applications of 3D laser scanning for architectural / BIM applications;
  • Benefits of 3D laser scanning;
  • Snapshots of point cloud data captured regionally at Nagambie, Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury, Wodonga, Wagga;
  • Types of 3D laser scanning deliverables available;
  • How this technology sits within the BIM cycle;
  • Demonstration of point cloud data, navigating around in 3D through a relevant dataset.

Matt Trevaskis is Associate - Senior Surveyor and 3D laser scanning specialist at Spiire, which is one of Australia’s largest privately owned property consultants, with over 200 people working across five locations in Victoria and NSW. Over the past 30 years, they have helped to create some of the most liveable and sustainable communities. They have offices in Albury, Geelong, Bendigo, Shepparton as well as their head office in Melbourne.

WiFi At DESIGN PHASE

This session by John Braakhuis will explain how building designers can assist their clients by including the right components for WiFi into homes and businesses during the design phase. With more of our entertainment, work, social connections, shopping and education being provided online, there is an ever-increasing reliance on reliable WiFi connections to make this happen. Reliable and well connected internet was once considered a luxury but is now essential. This session will cover:

  • Why wires are still important with WiFi.
  • How to include cabling design for WiFi (as you already do for mains power and lighting).
  • How to position WiFi systems to match the building design.
  • How to design space for network equipment.
  • How to plan for future technologies like Amazon, Echo and Automated devices.

John Braakhuis is a Small Business Technical Specialist who owns and runs Excelero IT Solutions. With 10 years’ experience working with small businesses, John’s passion is to help businesses through the use of technology to become more productive and competitive. Excelero IT Solutions supports clients in the building and construction industry, retail and all professional services. John has a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) from Monash University and Master of Marketing from Melbourne Business School. He has extensive experience in and understanding of all areas of communications through his roles with Telstra as business and marketing manager.
