Shergold-Weir Report and Potential Impact on the Design Community

Bronwyn Weir, one of the co-authors of the Shergold-Weir Report, will be our keynote speaker at our next CPD seminar in Melbourne on Monday evening, 1 April 2019. Since the release of this report, Bronwyn has been in high-demand as a speaker, and this should be a very informative presentation.

This landmark report is likely to have a big impact on the future directions of the building industry. Titled Building Confidence – Improving the effectiveness of compliance and enforcement systems for the building and construction industry across Australia, the report by Professor Peter Shergold and Ms Bronwyn Weir was commissioned last year by the Building Ministers’ Forum. The BMF directed Shergold and Weir to examine a range of issues outlined in comprehensive terms of reference for their work. Amongst other things, the Report argues for better quality documentation by design professionals, and also makes a number of observations and recommendations, which affect design professionals during design, construction and ongoing maintenance of buildings.

VBA Update

The Victorian Building Authority will also be presenting at the seminar, and will talk about:

  • The Building Activity Management System (BAMS), a new process currently under development anticipated to be launched on 1 July 2019 which aims to become a single source of information for Victorian building activity, as well as being an online solution for the collection of levy and issuance of building permit numbers; and
  • Findings from the Victorian Cladding Taskforce & Audit – learning from the past to regulate a safer future.

ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE PRESENTER:

In 2017 Bronwyn was co-appointed with Professor Peter Shergold by the Building MinistersForum to make recommendations on a national best practice approach for regulation of the building sector. The appointment reflects Bronwyn’s in-depth knowledge of building regulation, having acted over many years for building regulators, local government, fire brigades and the Architects Board in Victoria. Bronwyn was a member of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee for over 10 years. She is a legal advisor to the Victorian Cladding Taskforce, and is also currently advising the Queensland government on its controversial security of payment reforms. She has been a lawyer for over 20 years, and is founder and managing director of Weir Legal and Consulting Pty Ltd.
