Initially coined a ‘technology incubator’, and having been reported as the client’s “little Google” in the local media, Base 64 is far from a Silicon Valley “amusement park” workspace.
It has evolved from a shared space to a collective of likeminded small techno businesses with shared facilities. Tenancies, large and small, surround the Courtyard and Kitchen/café, with a special emphasis on putting the technology on show. This allows incidental interaction, between individuals and business, and provides opportunities for the interconnection of their technologies.
The idea of removing the “sealed box” mentality of a contemporary office building is maximized by a blurring of barriers between old and new, inside and out, and homely comforts and techno glitz. An exaggerated ‘Steam Punk’ aesthetic drifts in and out, celebrating a technological spirit of adventure that identifies so much with the client’s sense of humour, and, aesthetically embraces all things techno ‘geek’ – in a good way!
