Description

Join us for a discussion about the experiences of foreign journalists in Indonesia. Our speakers for this Basa-basi are Jewel Topsfield and Jenni Henderson, with Evelynd as moderator.

Jewel Topsfield was the Indonesia correspondent for The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald between 2015 and 2018. She is a multiple award winning journalist, who has been with Fairfax Media for 14 years. In 2016 she won the prestigious $20,000 Lowy Institute Media Award, which recognises journalists who have deepened and enriched the discussion of global issues in Australia. She led the team that won a Walkley Award for its reportage on claims Australian officials paid people smugglers to return a boat of asylum seekers to Indonesia. This also triggered a Senate Inquiry. Prior to being appointed Indonesia correspondent in 2015, she was the education editor of The Age. She was also the launch deputy editor of Fairfax's online opinion site in 2009. Her experience also includes a three-year stint in the Canberra Press Gallery covering federal politics, immigration and education.

Jenni Henderson is about to start as a producer on Al Jazeera's flagship television documentary program 101 East but is currently the Business and Economy editor for news website The Conversation. Before starting at The Conversation Jenni worked on the Mindframe national media initiative, helping journalists report on mental illness and suicide. She has also worked for a number of years in radio, online and television journalism for the ABC and for Reuters at the Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur bureaus.

Evelynd is finishing her degree on Master of Communication and Media Studies at Monash University. She is currently a professional intern at the ABC and has experiences on digital media. Evelynd has worked for AIYA Victoria and PPIA Victoria as Communication Officer. She is also a journalist at OZIP Magazine. Dancing with Bhinneka Arts and Cultural Group and enjoying footy with The Krakatoas Football team are her ways to spend weekends.
