Session structure

This online training session introduces the key concepts of the GS1 system – Identify, Capture and Share. It assumes no prior knowledge of this topic and quickly builds from basic knowledge to more sophisticated applications of the GS1 standards.

Session Times

This online session is delivered in 3 x 90-minute sessions via Zoom.

  • Session 1: 9:00 am - 10:30 am (90 minutes duration)
  • Session 2: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm (90 minutes duration)
  • Session 3: 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm (90 minutes duration)

Please note: In order to complete this course all modules must be attended.

Learning Outcomes

• Introduction to GS1 Australia and to the GS1 system

• Understanding the need for unique identification and data capture (e.g., barcodes)

• Identification of retail trade or non-retail trade items using the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) for different levels of packaging

• Which GS1 barcode to use, depending on the context and trading circumstances

• A close look at the GS1 DataBar and the 2D GS1 DataMatrix

• When to change or discontinue use of a GTIN

• How to identify your logistic units using the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC)

• How to identify locations using the Global Location Number (GLN)

• Understanding the use of the GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs)

• How to use the GS1 system to assist in traceability, FIFO (stock rotation) and inventory management

• The role of data quality in business

• How to create a barcode that scans first time, every time

• The importance of barcode quality

• Common problems and troubleshooting

• How to practically implement the GS1 system or improve its application within your business.
