Event Details

Have you always wanted to learn to dance?
Do you want a smooth entry into the Melbourne social dance scene?
Do you want to meet new people in an enjoyable and sociable environment?

Then read on about the fast, authentic and fun course designed to get you dancing as fast as possible.

The Destine Dance Ballroom Proficiency Course

The course is part of the Australian Dancing Society (ADS) awards system, and it has been developed to ensure that you learn to dance well at the end. It also means that at the end you will have certification (in the form of a certificate and trophy for each of the 2 dances) from the ADS on your newly developed dance ability.

The course runs on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 7:30pm starting on June 13th until July 18th.

Then, on the Friday night after the final clas (20 July) there is a celebratory social night where you (along with others) show off your dance skills to a representative of the ADS, and get your certification (award) and trophy.

The ideal course if you're thinking about learning to dance

The proficiency courses are designed specifically to give you the fastest way to experience all that dance has to offer. At the end of the course you will not only know how to dance quickstep and waltz, but you will have experienced all that dance has to offer from the pleasure and challenge of learning through to the fun of the social aspects. You can from then choose to learn other dances at the proficiency level, learn street Latin more formally and gain high skills and awards, or start your journey into the Melbourne social dance scene. You might even choose a mix of these, but the choice is yours, and you have numerous options to continue enjoying what you have learned and discovered.

Why is the cost what it is?

The cost for the course covers the following:

  • 6 x $17 classes = $102
  • Certificate and trophy = $20
  • ADS judge = $10
  • Social night attendance = $17
  • Total = $149

Do I need a partner?

No. there will be other people there, and you will be able to dance with them.

Can I bring my partner and only dance with them?

While you will need to dance with an instructor for your final dance to get your award and trophy, you can do the classes with your partner. Just let us know when you book at the class so we are aware of who is dancing with whom. Also, you and your partner will need to get in early to ensure that you both get a place.

Will there be someone for me to dance with?

We sell equal numbers of tickets for both ladies and gentlemen to ensure even numbers. Excluding people not being able to make it, you will have someone to dance with.

Do I know I will be learning to dance properly?

Because the course and final certification is completed within the ADS system, you know what you are being taught to dance properly. There will always be room for improvement, but you will have excellent foundations for wherever you choose to take your dance.

If I have danced before, then is this course for me?

If you have done some waltz and quickstep in the past, then you might be ready to move on to higher levels of training. However, you might also be interested in the proficiency courses in the other styles we teach. If you are not sure of the level that suits you, then contact us so we can talk more about what is best for you.

What actually happens in the class?

At the start of each class you, and everyone else, is given a name tag. You are then partnered up with someone and the instructors will start teaching you a routine. Each lesson the routine will be taken a little further. After a short period, you will swap partners and we will go through what has been covered again.

By going over the routine with different people, you learn the dance independently and you become a better dancer.

After half an hour, we then swap to another dance for the next half hour. At the end of the hour, we take a break and you have a chance to spend the next hour practicing what you have learned with the others in the class.

What if I do not like dancing with someone in the class?

We try to keep the class moving so that you never spend too much time with any one person. You can then choose who you dance with in the practice session. However, if you do have an issue, then let the teachers know; they will be able to find an appropriate way to deal with that issue.

Do I need to do the final demonstration?

You do not need to do the final presentation, unless you want the trophy and the award from the ADS. You have paid for it and you do get excellent feedback from the judge so it is worth making the time to do it. Even if you need to overcome some nerves.

What happens at the final demonstration?

The final demonstration is more like a social night. You and your fellow students come along for some social dancing. At a point in the evening, we will give each person a turn to dance the routine. Then we will go back to social dancing. Later, each person gets their award and feedback from the ADS judge and we then dance the night away.
