As pregnant women are a higher-risk group for COVID-19, additional precautions remain in place.

  • All attendees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (at least double vaccinated)
  • Face-masks are no longer required to be worn during the class, but are strongly recommended

Baby Safe Program - Safe Sleep: Small Group Class & E-Learning package

S uitable from 28 weeks of pregnancy onwards

Your package includes:

  • Safe sleep small group class (face-to-face)
  • Hands-on practice swaddling (wrapping) a newborn baby
  • One-year unlimited access to the Safe Sleeping e-learning module, including the Safe Sleeping Video series.

In the face-to-face small group class, Safe Sleeping, you will learn:

  • Reducing the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS
  • How to create a safe sleep environment for your newborn baby
  • Safe wrapping (swaddling) for sleep and to promote normal hip development
  • Use of a safe sleeping bag
  • The importance of avoiding over-heating (thermal stress)
  • Dressing your baby for safe sleep
  • Bedding and bedding amount
  • Room temperature
  • Cot or bassinete- which is recommended and why
  • Car seats, car capsules and car travel with a newborn baby
  • Use of baby slings and carriers
  • How to determine which nursery products are safe for your baby
  • Nursery products that are unsafe for babies, are not recommended, and can pose a risk of SUDI, including SIDS ('cot death')

Practical component:

Demonstration and hands-on practice of techniques to safely wrap (swaddle) a newborn for sleep and to promote normal hip development. Attendees will have their own baby (manikin) to practice on.

All participants receive:

  • Red Nose "Safe Sleeping" brochure
  • Red Nose "Supine is Safest" brochure
  • One-year unlimited access to the Safe Sleeping e-learning module, including the Safe Sleeping Video series, which includes:
  1. Safe sleeping to reduce the risk of SUDI, including SIDS
  2. Safe swaddling (wrapping) and use of a safe sleeping bag

If your baby has been born preterm and/or is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or the Special Care Nursery, please contact us about the Safe Sleeping Class for preterm and sick babies.

Cost: $80 per single attendee, or $160 per couple

Frequently asked questions:

What COVID-19 precautions are in place?

To minimise the risk of transmission of COVID-19, the following are provided for all participants:

  • Class size limited to 7 couples (14 attendees maximum)
  • All attendees and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Alcohol-based sanitiser at every table
  • Each participant will have their own manikin
  • All equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to and following each class.
  • Personal protective equipment (surgical face-mask & gloves) provided
  • All consumables are discarded at the end of the class and are not re-used
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring of all occupied spaces via a purpose-built mechanical ventilation system adjusting air circulation based on CO2 levels.

COVID-19 vaccination

Please note: Attendance at a small group, face-to-face class requires all attendees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (minimum of 2 doses; ideally two doses plus at least one booster).

Can my partner or other family member book a place at this program?

Yes, anyone can book a place to attend the Baby Safe: Safe Sleeping class.

  • This includes parters, grandparents, sisters and brothers (over 18 years of age)
  • Please book a place for each person who is attending with you.

Can I bring my baby with me?

Breastfeeding babies and babies <6 months of age are always welcome.

Can I bring another child with me?

Sorry- we are not able to accomodate siblings or children/infants over the age of 6 months at this class.

Can I claim a rebate on my Private Health insurance?

Most Private Health Funds do not offer a rebate for childbirth education classes- please check with your provider.

Can I get a refund if I am no longer able to attend?

Yes- a full refund is available if you cancel >24 hours prior to the face-to-face class. However, the Eventbrite fee is not refundable.

Cancellations <24 hours prior to the face-fo-face class (other than for hospital admission or positive COVID-19 diagnosis) and 'no shows' are non-refundable.

A full refund, or transfer to an alternative is automatically available if the class is cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions (lockdown).

Will I receive a certificate on completion of this class?

Attendance at a Baby Safe Safe Sleeping class does not lead to a professional qualification or a certification of competency in basic life support or infant resuscitation.

This is a non-accredited training course.

Associate Professor Rosemarie Boland a newborn educator, neonatal intensive care nurse and midwife with over 30 years’ experience. She specialises in providing first aid training for expectant parents, and parents and families of newborn babies and ex-premature infants. In addition, she develops training programs, clinical practice guidelines and resources for medical, nursing, midwifery and paramedic healthcare professionals in Victoria in her role as a statewide perinatal educator with the newborn emergency transport service.

A/Professor Rose Boland has over 25 peer reviewed publications, has written text book chapters and helps develop guidelines for Ambulance Victoria around obstetric and newborn emergencies.

The Baby Safe Program was developed by A/Professor Rose Boland. All face-to-face (small group) classes are taught by A/Professor Rose Boland.
