Baby Safe Program - Baby First Aid & Basic Life Support- Small Group

The Baby First Aid & Basic Life Support - Small group class combines hands-on learning of basic life support skills for babies and infants 0-12 months of age.

Your program includes:

Baby First Aid & Baby Basic Life Support hands on, face-to-face training in:

  1. When to call 000 for an ambulance
  2. Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR)
  3. Management of choking
  4. Management of febrile convulsions
  5. Button battery ingestion
  6. Bath and water safety
  7. Allergic reactions
  8. Anaphylaxis

Practical skills training using the Laerdal "Baby Anne" Manikins:

  • Baby cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR )
  • Management of an infant choking on milk
  • Management of an infant choking on food or a small object

Baby Basic Life Support Fridge Magnets

  • Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR )
  • Management of a choking infant

Baby Safety Resource Pack

Cost: $85 per single attendee or $165 per couple

(Inclusive of 10% GST)

Limited to 14 positions at each class (7 couples)

Frequently asked questions:

What COVID-19 precautions are in place?

To minimise the risk of transmission of COVID-19, the following are provided for all participants:

  • Class size limited to 7 couples (14 attendees maximum)
  • All attendees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (minimum of 2 doses; ideally two doses plus a booster)
  • Alcohol-based sanitiser at every table
  • Each participant will have their own manikin
  • Personal protective equipment (surgical face-mask & gloves) provided
  • All equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to and following each class.
  • All consumables are discarded at the end of the class and are not re-used
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring of all occupied spaces via a purpose-built mechanical ventilation system adjusting air circulation based on CO2 levels.

COVID-19 vaccination

Please note: Attendance at a small group, face-to-face class requires all attendees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (minimum of 2 doses ; ideally two doses plus at least one booster).

Can my partner or other family member book a place at this program?

Yes, anyone can book a place to attend the Baby Basic Life Support class.

  • This includes parters, grandparents, sisters and brothers (over 18 years of age)
  • Please book a place for each person who is attending with you.
  • If you need a booking for 3 people, please contact Dr Rose first to check on availability.

Can I bring my baby with me?

Babies <6 months of age are always welcome.

Can I bring another child with me?

Sorry- we are not able to accomodate siblings or children/infants over the age of 6 months at this class.

Can I claim a rebate on my Private Health insurance?

Most private Health Funds do not offer rebates for childbirth education classes. Please check with your provider.

Can I get a refund if I am no longer able to attend?

A full refund is available if you cancel >24 hours prior to the face-to-face class. However, the Eventbrite fee is not refundable.

Cancellations <24 hours prior to the face-fo-face class (other than for hospital admission or positive COVID-19 diagnosis) and 'no shows' are non-refundable.

A full refund, or transfer to an alternative is automatically available if the class is cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions (lockdown).

Will I receive a First Aid Certificate on completion of this class?

Attendance at a Baby Basic Life Support class does not lead to a professional qualification or a certification of competency in basic life support or infant resuscitation.

This is a non-accredited training course.

A/Professor Rosemarie Boland a newborn educator, neonatal intensive care nurse and midwife with over 30 years’ experience. She specialises in providing first aid training for expectant parents, and parents and families of newborn babies and ex-premature infants. In addition, she develops training programs, clinical practice guidelines and resources for medical, nursing, midwifery and paramedic healthcare professionals in Victoria in her role as a statewide perinatal educator with the newborn emergency transport service.

A/Professor Rose Boland has over 25 peer reviewed publications, has written text book chapters and helps develop guidelines for Ambulance Victoria around obstetric and newborn emergencies.

The Baby Safe Program was developed by Associate Professor Rose Boland. All classes (virtual, small group and private) are taught by Associate Professor Rose Boland.
