Event description

Following a paper on automotive sites at Fishermans Bend at the 2018 Automotive Historians Australia (AHA) Conference, the AHA have organised a bus tour of the Bend to see first hand the scope of the industry, original buildings that remain and regeneration occurring currently.

Norm Darwin will lead the tour and provide commentary on the history of some 18 locations within the boundary of Williamstown Road, Ingles Street and the Yarra.

Locations will include Holden, Rootes/ Chrysler, AMI/ Toyota, Autocraft, Rolloy Pistons and Lanes/Neal's Motors.

The tour will begin at the old GMH Head office (new Boral HQ) in Salmon Street, and take approximately 2 hours concluding at the former GMH Social Centre where participants will see some of Holden historical exhibits and hear from design staff members.

The GM-H Social Centre was built circa 1945 in the Moderne style in harmony with the adjacent Administration building. It is the site of Holden’s inauguration and launch of the 48-215 model just on 70 years ago. The Social Centre held events such as employee dinners and dances, and served as the staff canteen. The interior features a first floor stage flanked by a pair of large murals depicting the history and future of transport.

The building currently houses two dozen significant vehicles from Holden’s heritage collection. These include last-off-the-line cars, several millionth milestone vehicles, one-off builds and an example of the GM EV1 electric vehicle used for engineering evaluation. There is also a display of engines through Holden’s history along with other items of memorabilia.

Finally, at 1 pm we invite tour attendees to book a ticket to an optional lunch after the tour, at the Railway Club Hotel, Raglan St Port Melbourne. Tickets are for booking purposes to indicate if you're attending. Lunch will be at the ticket holders expense.

The tour will be restricted to 20 members of AHA on a first come first served basis. Bookings can be made through this Eventbrite page. Get in quick as places are limited!
