Description

Gregory Smith: Out of the Forest

For ten years he lived in isolation in northern NSW, foraging for food and eating bats. Today, Dr Gregory Peel Smith, has a PhD and teaches in the Social Sciences at University. His uplifting memoir is a unique insight into how far off track a life can go, and a powerful reminder that we can all find our way back.

Out of the Forest

In his memoir, Out of the Forest, Gregory P. Smith recalls the heartbreaking story of his childhood and his difficult but triumphant journey to overcome the scars of abuse.

As one of the many victims of physical, psychological and sexual abuse, now known as the Forgotten Australians, Gregory spent years wandering between work and homelessness, battling addiction, alcoholism and mental health, and struggling to make meaningful human connection.

His instinct was to flee.

Around 1990 he retreated to the forest outside of Mullumbimby where he lived alone on the fringes of society. After ten years Gregory emerged emaciated and close to death. He made a decision to turn his life around.
