Register today for the ACT branch’s event Australia’s Strategic Outlook: 2017. Young Australians in International Affairs is privileged to be joined by Professor Rory Medcalf, Dr Alison Broinowski and Andrew Carr on the 23rd of May at the Haydon Allen Tank to discuss Australia’s foreign policy outlook for the year.
Professor Medcalf is the Head of the National Security College and has almost three decades of experience across diplomacy, intelligence analysis, think tanks, universities and journalism, including a foundational role as Director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute. His research interests are in Australia's security challenges, the Indo-Pacific concept of Asia’s strategic environment, India, China, maritime security and nuclear issues.
Dr Alison Broinowski was an Australian diplomat until 1996. Her last overseas assignment was at the Australian Mission to the UN in New York. Her PhD is in Asian Studies at ANU. She has written or edited 14 books on Australia’s interface with Asia and with the United Nations, four of the latest being About Face: Asian Accounts of Australia 2003, Howard’s War 2003, Allied and Addicted 2007, and with David Stephens, The Honest History Book 2017. She is a Research Affiliate at ANU, and a Fellow of AIIA. She is Vice President of Australians for War Powers Reform and Vice President of Honest History.
Andrew Carr is a Senior Lecturer in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. His research interests include Australian foreign and defence policy, middle powers and Asia-Pacific security. His recent books are ‘Winning the Peace: Australia's campaign to change the Asia-Pacific’ (MUP, 2015) and ‘Asia-Pacific Security: An Introduction’ (Georgetown University Press, 2016). Dr Carr is also the editor of the Centre of Gravity policy paper series, a co-editor of the journal Security Challenges and a frequent media commentator for both Australian and Asia-Pacific press.
