Join the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) Melbourne Branch for this session and hear from industry expert Alan Cassidy.

Mr Cassidy will provide attendees with a background as to how GKN was established in Australia, the lead up to the start-up of the JSF work, the award of contracts and execution of the work.

This discussion will include the people involved, the customers, relationships, culture, ethics, politics, challenges and successes of GKN. 

Alan Cassidy

Former Head of Engineering, GKN Aerospace Engineering Services, Australia 

Alan was a senior manager at GKN Aerospace Engineering Services, Australia with overall responsibility for GKN program and technical performance on projects such as the Joint Strike Fighter project.

He started as a sixteen year old apprentice with Short Brothers in Belfast and then had fifty three years of continuous employment in the aircraft industry until he retired. This included over thirty years in senior management positions such as Head of Engineering, Acting Operations Manager / Business Unit Manager, Chief Engineer, Chief Designer, Program Manager, Engineering Manager, Chief Design Engineer, Chief Structural Designer, Chief Stress Engineer, Project Design Engineer, Manufacturing Engineering Manager and Project Manager.

Alan has generally has had dual program and engineering management responsibilities for much of his career. He was Aircraft Design Certifying Signatory for various major RAAF aircraft upgrade programs undertaken by Hawker de Havilland, Victoria.

Alan’s technical engineering expertise is largely in airframe structural design and analysis applied to a wide range of both new and aging airframe structures, installations, aircraft modifications, upgrades, repairs including battle damage, fatigue life extensions, airframe static and fatigue testing, fatigue life monitoring and assessment.

Alan’s expertise in management includes all the aspects of program and staff management that are required to facilitate satisfactory program and company outcomes.
