Event description

Description

Before booking tickets for the Diffraction/Refraction Show, please ensure you have registered for your free entry to the Synchrotron Open Day.

The light created at the Australian Synchrotron is about a million times brighter than the sun. This brilliant light can be used to assemble tiny machines that would fit into the eye of a needle, improve cancer detection, and develop new drugs to fight malaria.

Diffraction/Refraction Show

See the physics of the synchrotron as we bend and shape a beam of electrons with strange forces, and use lasers and colourful glowing gases to show exactly how the synchrotron answers exciting questions for science.

How does the synchrotron push high energy beams of microscopic charges around bends to keep them turning in a circle? Come see why magnetic fields are used to deflect and shape the beams of electrons that are the engines of synchrotron light, using quadrupoles, dipoles and electromagnetic coils.

Synchrotron Open Day - Overview

On Sunday 8th October you will have a rare chance to go behind the scenes of this state-of-the-art facility and experience these scientific wonders first-hand.

Please allow approximately two hours for your Synchrotron experience. In this time you will have the chance to:

  • Learn how the Synchrotron works and the amazing research it enables.
  • Take a guided tour inside the Synchrotron and meet our scientists along the way.
  • Unwind in our cafe and picnic areas, where you can listen to live interviews with Australian Synchrotron staff while children enjoy one of our exciting 20-minute science workshops.

You can also attend a careers expo, go hands-on with Swinburne University's Science Stations and test your skills on the Wave Rider surfboard. There will be plenty of photo opportunities and regular giveaways too!

Entry to the Synchrotron is free, including all guided tours.
