Description

Join the audience or sign up to perform at this Poetry Slam heat.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a first-time performer or a spoken word aficionado – just rock up, ready to write down your name and give a breathtaking performance. Or if you want to join the audience why not raise your hand to become a judge on the day.

We are excited and proud that Jesse Oliver, the 2017 APS champion, will be our special VIP host. Jesse is a wholesome Perth Poet who is best known for his casual conversational style of slam. Find out more about Jesse from his bio http://www.wordtravels.info/jesse-oliver

Unfortunately, Melanie Mununggurr-Williams is no longer able to attend this event.

Early birds to register to perform at our heat event will catch a special reward!

The first ten performers or contestants to register at our Heat event will receive a Ritz Cinema double pass. There is a maximum of 20 contestants per heat. The winner of this heat as chosen by the panel of audience judges will be awarded a $100 voucher and go on to perform at the Sydney Finals Event (venue and date TBC)

Australian Poetry Slam is a live literary performance program where the audience is the judge. Performing writers are given a microphone, a live audience, and just two minutes to capture the crowd. Our Margaret Martin Library branch is hosting a Sydney heat, one of 60 heats running across Australia leading up the finals.

So bring your best prose, words and rhymes, or just sit back and get inspired by red-hot wordsmithery.

How Does it Work?

Never been to a poetry slam before? Whether you're a poet or an audience member, you can be part of the search for the next slam champion. Here’s a handy guide to how the evening will go down:

  • Arrive anytime from 1.00pm (entry is free and seating is unallocated). If you would like to enter the slam and perform a poem, you can sign up from 1.30pm. If not, just settle in with a refreshment and wait for the performance to begin!

  • The slam begins at 2.00pm

  • Poems must be the original work of the performer written within the last 12 months.
Writers must perform a new piece at each progressive level/round starting from heats, to State/Territory Finals, to the National Final. Additionally, 2019 works can not have been performed in an Australian Poetry Slam event in a previous year.

  • No musical accompaniment. No props. No costumes.

  • Two minute limit.

  • The MC selects five judges at random from the crowd.

  • After each poetry performance, judges hold up score cards using a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the highest. Of the five scores for each poet, only the middle three scores are counted. The judges’ decisions are final

  • Two performers from the Randwick heat will be chosen by the audience as local slam champions and will be invited to perform at the NSW State Final. Audiences at the finals will then chose two performers to compete at the Australian Poetry Slam National Final.
